Zinc Chloride in Normal Saline Solution

Available presentation(s): 30, 50 mL. Verify the exact concentration and total active quantity on the prescription and dispensing label.

Introduction: Zinc is an essential trace element required for catalytic, structural and regulatory proteins. Intravenous zinc chloride or zinc sulfate is generally used as a parenteral-nutrition additive or for documented deficiency.

Dosage: Dose depends on age, deficiency, gastrointestinal losses, renal/hepatic function and total parenteral nutrition content. Follow specialist nutrition guidance. Prescribe as elemental zinc and verify the salt/concentration. The listed 5 or 10 mg/mL concentrates require dilution and careful unit conversion.

Mechanisms of Action: Supports numerous metalloenzymes, DNA/protein synthesis, immune function and wound healing and stabilises cellular structures.

Contraindications & Precautions: Avoid excessive cumulative dosing. Use caution in renal impairment and cholestasis depending on the nutrition regimen. Long-term high exposure can cause copper deficiency; monitor zinc and copper when prolonged therapy is used.

Interactions: Parenteral interactions are mainly compatibility-related. Account for all zinc-containing nutrition and supplements. High zinc exposure antagonises copper absorption (more relevant enterally but clinically important overall).

Adverse Reactions / Side Effects: Rapid or excessive administration can cause nausea, vomiting, fever, hypotension and local irritation. Chronic excess may cause copper deficiency, anaemia, neutropenia and neurologic effects.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Zinc requirements increase during pregnancy and lactation, but excess is harmful. Use only to meet documented nutritional need under specialist oversight.

Storage: Store under the conditions stated on the Optimus dispensing label and product-specific worksheet. Protect from light where labelled. Do not freeze unless explicitly validated. Maintain cold chain if the label requires refrigeration. Do not use after the assigned beyond-use date or if there is visible particulate matter, precipitation, colour change, loss of container integrity or evidence of improper storage. Once entered, follow the validated in-use time; do not assume a compounded vial is multi-dose.
